The District House (at present the museum of Trenčin)

The museum originally served as a the city palace of the Ilešházis and is located near the Upper city gate. Built in the 17th. century, late Baroque adjustments were made to the palace in 1760 -1764. museum
The original four nave ground-plan was modified by the addition of another floor, a passage hall, a staircase with Tuscan columns and by making adjustments to the front of the palace. A portion of the inner arcade yard has been preserved. The modifications were designed by Jan Kráľ, construction was inspected by Jozef Mitic. Stone-cutting works were carried out by Vavrinec Szelcl and Šimon Svab. Metal works were performed by Jozef Cvelfer. After moving the Trenčín District seat from the Trenčin castle to the City, the palace served as the District offices and District representatives were meeting on the first floor of the main hall. At present, the District House is the seat of the Trenčin museum, an institution with over 120 years of tradition. Museum’s exhibition and congres halls house a permanent exhibit focused on history, nature, archaeology, the Nation’s history and art from Trenčín and its surrounding. It also serves as a multi-purpose building, holding concerts, lectures, seminars and an occassional cultural event.
