Nové Mesto nad Váhom lies in central Považie. First document times of the city are from 6. June 1253, when king Belo IV gave its inhabitants city rights for services shown during the Tartars invasion.
Among interesting artefacts in the city are baroque and renaissance houses, on the square dating from the 16th and 18th century a Marian column from 1696. The evangelic church was built in 1787 and was completed with the tower being built in 1928. A Jewish cemetery with tombstones dating from the 16th to 19th century and chapel from St. Andrew from the beginning of the 18th century. In the 19th century there was a boom of trades it became a centre of business for agricultural goods, especially grain. In 1870 the first Slovak theatre performance took place here. In 1875 a printing house was opened. Nearby Nové Mesto nad Váhom there is recreational area known as Zelená Voda.

Church of the birth of Vigrin Mary
This fortified church belongs to one of the most beautiful sights of Považie. An originally late roman church from mid 13th century was during the years 1414-1423 rebuilt in a gothic style as an octagonal object. From 1667 – 1675 a large gothic nave was built at a right angle to the baroque three nave building and connected through arches. In the church there are stations of the cross from J. B. Klemens. At the church there is a priory building, built in years 1643 – 94. In its chapel there are wall paintings from 1692.

Podjavorinské múzeum
Podjavorinské museum in Nové Mesto nad Váhom has its origins in an renaissance building with a facade in baroque style dating from the 17th century and is also known as Gilányi home or “Gilániovce” after one of its previous owners. It was founded in 1950. In the space of the museum there is an exposition devoted to the history of Nové Mesto and surrounds, its culture and traditions. It is divided into various sections devoted to archaeology, history ethnography and history of guild workshops in Nové Mesto and surroundings.
