Park of Milan Rastislav Štefánik

Printer-friendly version
Park General M. R. Štefánik is connected between the train and bus station, and the centre of the town. In provides a nice resting space and is ideal for short strolls.
There are only a few towns in Slovakia which can boast of such an ideal space that has been cultivated for more than 100 years. In 1886 the original park with trees and bushes was set, botanically labelled in both Latin and Hungarian names (official languages of the times). After the war, a bandstand was built which electric lights so the tradition of the music was continued.
At the edge of the park closest to the centre there is a fountain precisely in the location of the memorial of M. R. Štefánik from 1938 by J. Pospíšil, which was later destroyed for ideological reasons. From the original memorial only the bust was preserved which is now part of the new memorial from 1998 in a shape of a broken wing according to the proposals of painter Juraj Oravec. In the park there are several other artefacts and memorials.
