brezinaThe territory of Brezina woods forms the southwest end of the Strážovské Hills, reaching deep into Trenčín. The history of this territory is connected to the history of Trenčín castle, since the earliest times of Trenčín dominion. In the 19th century, part of Brezina woods was a barren slope. Goats would graze on the hill, hence its name - Kozí vrch (Goat Hill). Toward the end of the 19th century, a Trenčín archivist, and discoverer of the Roman inscription on the rock, by the name of Ľudovít Bonaventúra Stárek (1803 – 1863) began systematic forestation of the area. The first successfully introduced trees that would finally grow were birch trees which gave name to the woods – Brezina (Birch Grove).
Today, the size of the woods is 212.68 ha. Tree species include beech, Carpinus, maple, elm, spruce, pine, and larch. The close proximity of the woods area to the City center is of great value to the local residents as it offers ideal conditions for mental and physical relaxation.
