White Carpathians

Printer-friendly version
Main ridge stretches mostly along the Slovak - Moravian border. Its length from the city of Skalica to Vlársky mountain pass is more than 100 km.

Within the outlying areas of Trenčín are the following zones:
Javorinská highland, with the tallest peak of the ridge (Veľká Javorina 970 m),
Bešiny (628 m),
Lopenícka highland (Veľký Lopeník),
Súčanská highland (Chabová 731 m)
Bošácke rifts (Bradlová 733 m)

The climate is mild (warm) however, the peaks belong to the cold zone. The greatest forest components of the Carpathians in the lower regions are composed of oak-carpinus woods, higher regions have beechwood. Significant characteristic of the ridge is its grasslands with rich occurrence of plants from the Orchid family. Rare species of plants and animals are also found here. In 1979, 43,519 ha were declared the White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area. The unique beauty of the landscape picture is shown in “kopanice” (remote settlements) with elements of folk architecture and variety of folk traditions.
